Eberhard’s History of the German Americans in Early Los Angeles City and County, intended for use by scholars, researchers, community leaders, students of German American studies, second generation German Americans, and government or industrial leaders, purports to serve as “a comprehensive guide that closely examines the origin of the German Americans in Los Angeles and their contributions in building up local society.” The raison d’e^tre for this book stems from the author’s personal experiences as a German American in Los Angeles and his long-time involvement with the German community in the city. Indeed, Hans W. Eberhard comes surprisingly close to providing a well-researched and comprehensive overview of most of the significant information about the origins of German Americans in Los Angeles. This work is a well-thought out history of California’s German Americans; it offers the reader interesting insights into the daily lives of some immigrants with countless examples. My overall impression is that the author has done a good and careful job of annotating his comments and explanations.

A fine book, reminding us where we came from. Our real progress was based on experience and facts, not on public relations and our credit-line. We forgot to tell our children that a tree has to have roots. Unless it’s Hollywood, making another movie. Eberhard is one of the rare Germans who can and dares to remember how it really was.

His readiness to support the institution of this Day from the first draft of the bill to its final ratification has contributed to the fact that Americans now better understand the achievements of the German-Americans .
